The Story of ..."Last Farewell"
It is Easter, 1901. In Bur Oak, Iowa, Charles Ingalls has gotten vacation
time from his bosses, and wife Caroline is elated. After a dinner fight (in which Charles gets a black eye), they decide to visit their old home in Walnut Grove. While on the train ride, land swindlers (led by Nathan Lassiter) plot their takeover of Walnut Grove. They learn that it was once Indian reservation property, and therefore want to clear the entire town...literally.When Hero Township learns of the takeover plan, Rev. Alden checks the town
deed and learns that Lassiter's men has every legal right to the town. Meanwhile, back at the Wilder Inn, Caroline, Laura, Almanzo, baby Rose, and Sherwood Montague are visited by Lassiter's men. Lassiter demands they leave the property immediately. Mr. Montague, trying to stop the commotion, is attacked by Lassiter's goons, but Caroline fires from her rifle a warning shot, demanding Lassiter to get off the Wilder property. The next day, during school, Jason asks to be excused for the outhouse. He
runs out and sees Lassiter's men approaching the town. The U.S. Calvary comes after them, only to learn they have less than 24 hours to clear the town. But Col. Arthur Forbes (head of the Calvary) and Nels Oleson asks to extend the deadline by a few days in order for Hero Township to say "goodbye", and the request is granted. That night, during a meeting (after the Carters return), Hero Township
determines that if Lassiter and company want the town, they can have it...but not everything that's on it. They propose to blow up the town using sticks of TNT the Carters bought during their errand. On Easter Sunday, all of the citizens plant their charges. The Wilders are
the first to destroy their property. Back at the town, each one follows (Mr. Edwards, the Feed and Seed man, Nels, Willie, etc.) as the populace look on in sadness. The witnesses return to what's left of the church and pray. Lassiter and company arrive at the town and are dumbfounded by what they see. But Mr. Edwards sets them straight by saying "you may own this town, but what was on it is ours, to do what we saw fit". The Calvary determines that no law was broken, but Lassiter is warned by mayors of other towns that the same act of destruction will happen if they try to take over other towns. In both defeat and victory, Rev. Alden leads Hero Township in singing "Onward, Christian Soldiers", as they march for Bur Oak, Iowa, and perhaps other cities. But the Little House that has been home to the Ingalls for over 30 years now
lies vacant, with only rabbits roaming free.~NOTE~
Now, the house that was once used for the TV Series is still in it's
rightful place after 30 years... It lies in Simi Valley, CA where the outside
seanes of "Little House" were shot. If you wish to visit the
